“What is a written composition?” Is one of these questions asked my students all of the time, and that I have a very simple answer. It is an opportunity for you to express your self and let the world know what’s important to you.

“Why is your written composition so important?” This is actually a two-fold question. At the written essay portion, you only have 35 minutes to write a very short essay on a particular topic. The article isn’t scored but rather it is sent off to each individual law school where you are applying. The written composition, therefore, is an important part of your application bundle. As it is so important, don’t attempt to cut corners. If you really want to do well in the law schools you’re applying to, then spend the extra time writing a good essay. Start out by learning as much about the specific law school as possible. Determine the history, current rankings, what the student body appears like (size), etc..

You also will need to devote time on your introduction and conclusion. These are the pieces of your essay that will make the difference between a good grade and a poor quality. An introductory paragraph must be a powerful conclusion to your previous paragraphs. Make sure the introduction wraps up the entire idea behind your essay.

Your second sentence is the one that will actually capture the reader’s attention. The very first sentence is your introduction. In case this introductory paragraph does not excite the reader, then you’ve wasted your likelihood of getting in the doorway. If you’ve got nothing significant to say in the first paragraph, don’t bother finishing the piece.
